35 Inch Flare Line

The 35” line had suffered internal corrosion, resulting in a through-wall defect.

DEFECT DESCRIPTION

The 35” line had suffered internal corrosion, resulting in a through-wall defect. The gases within the line, when in contact with water and humidity, generated sulfuric acid which caused severe additional damage to the pipe. The acid also dripped onto adjacent sections of the installation, corroding the underlying metal. As the customer was unable to isolate the line, a composite repair solution was required to seal the leak locations. Due to the hazardous environment, breathing apparatus was required to complete the work.

SOLUTION

Metalyte Pipeworks produced a repair method using Herculyte epoxies together with a steel plate and Chemibond to arrest the leak live. The surface was prepared using an MBX machine and 6 layers of Dragon UHT composite system were applied and cured until a minimum of 74.5 shore D hardness was achieved.
