NATURE OF DEFECT
Three CuNiFe seawater lines had suffered from internal erosion, resulting in significant wall loss. One of the repair locations had developed a through-wall leak, while the remaining lines required reinforcement to restore their integrity. An engineered repair solution was required to seal the live leak and return all three lines to their full design specification.
SOLUTION
Metalyte Pipeworks designed an engineered repair in accordance with ISO 24817 to seal the live leak and restore the integrity of all three seawater lines. The repair was designed to provide a 10-year design life while allowing the affected assets to remain in service.
REPAIR METHOD
A controlled live leak sealing process was first carried out on the leaking line to restore containment. Once the leak had been successfully arrested, all three repair locations were prepared before engineered composite repairs were installed, cured under controlled conditions and verified through quality assurance checks prior to completion.
CONCLUSION
The engineered repairs successfully sealed the live leak and restored the integrity of all three CuNiFe seawater lines. The repairs were completed without interrupting operations, providing a 10-year design life in accordance with the approved repair specification.
