Discharge and Suction Lines

The 20 inch and 24 inch lines had suffered from excessive external corrosion and potential internal wall loss on the 24 inch concrete lines

NATURE OF DEFECT

The 20” and 24” lines had suffered from excessive external corrosion and potential internal wall loss on the 24” concrete lines. This resulted in reduced wall thickness and leaks at 6 separate locations. The client required a composite repair to reinforce the areas and bring the lines back into safe operational condition.

SOLUTION

Metalyte Pipeworks produced a repair method using Herculyte epoxies and a minimum overwrap of 4 layers of Sea Dragon and 4 layers of Dragon Q-STD system on the 24” concrete lines. 8 layers of Dragon-Q-STD were applied on the steel lines and location 6 was wrapped in 38 layers of Dragon-Q-UHT.

REPAIR METHOD

Herculyte epoxies were fully mixed and inserted over the defects. The surfaces were prepared (excluding the identified defect areas) using shot blasting and MBX. Surface defects within the immediate repair areas were repaired using Herculyte resins and Sea Dragon paste. 500 microns of Sea Dragon resin was applied as a bonding coat and the repair area was wrapped in Sea Dragon composite to form a strong bond to the concrete pipes. Once cured, engineered Dragon Q-STD composite was applied and cured until a minimum of 74.5 “Shore D” hardness was achieved.
