25 Composite Repairs to Gasoline and Jet Fuel Pipelines

A number of 18 inch gasoline lines and 20 inch gasoline and jet fuel lines had suffered from external corrosion

NATURE OF DEFECT

A number of 18″ gasoline lines and 20″ gasoline and jet fuel lines had suffered from external corrosion, resulting in multiple areas of pitting and wall loss. The defects were located beneath a jetty structure where access was restricted. The client required a composite repair solution to restore the integrity of the pipelines and avoid pipe replacement.

SOLUTION

Metalyte Pipeworks designed and installed engineered composite repairs to 25 corrosion defects across six process lines. The repair solution utilised Herculyte repair materials and Dragon Q-STD composite systems to restore pipeline integrity and extend service life.

REPAIR METHOD

The repair locations were mechanically prepared to remove coatings and corrosion products and create the required surface profile. Defects were rebuilt and re-profiled using Herculyte repair materials before applying a Dragon resin bonding coat. The repair areas were then wrapped in a minimum of 4 layers of engineered Dragon Q-STD composite, compression wrapped, cured, hardness tested and coated with a protective epoxy finish.

CONCLUSION

Metalyte Pipeworks successfully completed 25 composite repairs across the 18″ gasoline and 20″ gasoline and jet fuel pipelines. The repairs allowed the pipelines to remain in service while avoiding replacement and extending the operational life of the assets.
