10 Inch Valve and Plug

The 10” valve had suffered from external corrosion.

NATURE OF DEFECT

The 10” valve had suffered from external corrosion. This resulted in corrosion of the pipe coating and wall thinning. The client required a composite repair to encapsulate the defect areas and bring the line back up to its full design specification.

SOLUTION

Metalyte Pipeworks produced a repair method using Herculyte epoxies to encapsulate the defects with a minimum overwrap of 16 layers of Dragon Q-UHT composite system.

REPAIR METHOD

The surface was prepared (excluding the identified defect area) using an MBX machine to gain a surface profile to SSP.SP11. Surface defects within the immediate repair area were repaired using Herculyte resins, with the valve body and flanges profiled and encapsulated. 500 microns of Dragon resin was applied as a bonding coat and repair area was wrapped in 16 layers of Engineered Dragon Q-UHT composite and cured until a minimum of 74.5 “Shore D” hardness was achieved.
