16 Patch Repairs

The tanks suffered corrosion under insulation (CUI) on the vertical shell

NATURE OF DEFECT

The tanks suffered corrosion under insulation (CUI) on the vertical shell. This resulted in corrosion patches and pitting of various sizes and depths. The client required composite repairs to prevent further external corrosion and restore the strength of the tank wall.

SOLUTION

The damaged areas were restored using a composite repair system designed in accordance with ISO 24817, ensuring structural integrity, corrosion protection, and minimal downtime.

REPAIR METHOD

1. The defect areas were inspected, cleaned, and roughened to the required surface profile, then degreased.
2. Surface defects were filled and the original geometry was restored.
3. A bonding resin layer was applied.
4. Multiple wraps of Dragon composite with overlap were applied.
5. The wrap was compressed and cured at ≥ 50 °C until Shore D hardness ≥ 74.5 was achieved.
6. After curing, a UV- and chemical-resistant epoxy coating was applied, QA checks were completed,
and the repair was tagged for traceability.
