NATURE OF DEFECT
The 18” seawater line had suffered from internal erosion just above the weld. This resulted in a pin hole through wall leak. The clients on board personnel have applied a temporary bandage and the customer now requires a composite repair from Metalyte Pipeworks to seal the leak locations.
SOLUTION
Metalyte Pipeworks produced a repair method using Herculyte epoxies to seal the leaks with a minimum overwrap of 4 layers of Dragon Q-STD composite system.
REPAIR METHOD
The defect was sealed using Herculyte epoxies and the surface was prepared using an MBX machine and hand tools. 2 layers of Herculyte LV cloth was applied as a bonding coat to the entire repair area prior to application of the Dragon composite. Once the Herculyte LV was fully cured, the flanges were profiled and the entire repair area was wrapped in 4 layers of Engineered Dragon-Q-STD composite and allowed to cure until a minimum of 74.5 “Shore D” hardness was achieved.
