40 Inch Butterfly Valve Sea Water

Client required a composite repair to seal the leak locations live to prevent an unplanned shutdown.

Nature of Defect

The main sea water 40” isolation butterfly valve, supplying cooling water for 2 refineries, had suffered from joint gasket failure and resulted in a leak from the flanged joint. The client required a composite repair to seal the leak locations live to prevent an unplanned shutdown.

Solution

Metalyte Pipeworks produced a repair method using a bespoke injectable composite system (TITAN 505) to arrest the leak and applied a composite overwrap with 12 layers of Dragon Q-UHT composite system.

Repair Method

Metalyte applied their high tensile injectable composite system to arrest the leak live. The substrate was then prepared (excluding the identified defect area) using an MBX machine to gain a surface profile to SSP.SP11 and the valve body was profiled to ensure a smooth overwrap. 500 microns of Dragon resin was applied as a bonding coat and the repair area was wrapped in 12 layers of Engi- neered Dragon Q-UHT composite and allowed to cure until a minimum of 74.5 Shore D hardness was achieved.
