16 Inch Crude Oil Line

The 16” line had suffered from external corrosion.

NATURE OF DEFECT

The 16” line had suffered from external corrosion. This resulted in significant wall loss. The client required a composite repair to reinstate integrity and bring the line back up to its full design specification.

SOLUTION

Metalyte Pipeworks produced a repair method using Herculyte epoxies to reinforce the defects with a minimum overwrap of 12 layers of Dragon Q-STD composite system. The Dragon Q-STD is compatible with crude oil.

REPAIR METHOD

The substrate was prepared using an MBX machine and all surface defects within the immediate repair area were repaired and the geometry of the flange was profiled accordingly. 500 microns of Dragon resin was applied as a bonding coat and the repair area was wrapped in 12 layers of Engineered Dragon Q-STD composite and allowed to cure until a minimum of 74.5 “Shore D” hardness was achieved.
