8 Inch Crude Oil Line Repair

The 8” line had suffered from internal corrosion over a 2 metre section

NATURE OF DEFECT

The 8” line had suffered from internal corrosion over a 2 metre section. This resulted in wall thinning down to 1mm. The client requires a composite repair to infill the defects and bring the line back up to its full design specification. The repair is to extend onto the 34” collector line.

SOLUTION

Metalyte Pipeworks produced a repair method using Herculyte epoxies to infill the defects with a minimum overwrap of 14 layers of Dragon Q-STD composite system.

REPAIR METHOD

The substrate was prepared (excluding the identified defect area) using the clients on site shot blast team to SA 2.5 surface profile. Any surface defects within the immediate repair area were repaired and 500 microns of Dragon resin were applied as a bonding coat to the entire repair area prior to application of the Dragon composite. The repair area was wrapped in 14 layers of Engineered Dragon Q-STD composite and allowed to cure until a minimum of 74.5 “Shore D” hardness was achieved.
