16 INCH SEAWATER LINE

The 16” line had suffered from internal corrosion.

NATURE OF DEFECT

The 16” line had suffered from internal corrosion. This resulted in a through wall defect on another companies existing wrap. The client requires a composite repair to seal the leak locations and to bring the line back up to its full design specification.

SOLUTION

Metalyte Pipeworks produced a repair method using Herculyte epoxies to resolve the defects with a minimum overwrap of 18 layers of Cayman composite system.

REPAIR METHOD

Herculyte epoxies were used to arrest the leak. The substrate was prepared (excluding the identified defect area) using an MBX machine to gain a surface profile to SSP.SP11. Surface defects within the immediate repair area were repaired using Herculyte resins. The flanges and valve body were profiled accordingly and fully encapsulated leaving the valve handle to still be fully functional. 2 layers of Herculyte LV cloth was applied as a bonding coat to the entire repair area prior to application of the Cayman composite. Once the Herculyte LV was fully cured, the repair area was wrapped in 18 layers of Engineered Cayman STD composite and allowed to cure until a minimum of 72 “Shore D” hardness was achieved.
