NATURE OF DEFECT
The 16” line at Zones 1, 2, and 3 had suffered from external corrosion. This resulted in localised wall loss at each location. The client required a composite repair to fill the wall loss corrosion pits and bring the line back up to its full design specification.
SOLUTION
Zone 1 was calculated as 79% wall loss, Zone 2 calculated as 47% wall loss, and Zone 3 calculated as 33% wall loss. Metalyte Pipeworks produced a repair method using Herculyte epoxies to repair the defects with an overwrap of between 6 and 34 layers of Cayman composite system.
REPAIR METHOD
The substrate surface was prepared using an MBX machine to gain a surface profile to SSP.SP11. Surface defects within the immediate repair area were repaired using Herculyte resins. 500 microns of Herculyte LV resin was applied as a bonding coat to the entire repair area prior to the application of the Cayman composite. Once the Herculyte LV was part cured, the repair area was wrapped in the required layers of Engineered Cayman composite as per above and allowed to cure until a minimum of 72 “Shore D” hardness was achieved.
