3 Inch Corroded Natural Gas Line

Areas of wall loss were identified on the elbow of a 3” carbon steel line

Nature of Defect

Areas of wall loss were identified on the elbow of a 3” carbon steel line. The remaining wall thickness is 2.4mm at its thinnest area. The client required a composite wrap to provide extra reinforcement at this location, to stop the corrosion and prevent any leaks occurring in the future.

Solution

Metalyte Pipeworks solution was to apply 6 layers of their bespoke field applied composite system. This would halt any further corrosion issues and build the strength back in to the line for full operational requirements.

Repair Method

The full length of the line was shot blasted to Sa 2.5 to remove all corrosion and contaminants, and to gain the surface profile required for the composite to adhere to. A resin bond primer coat was applied prior to the application of the composite. The line was then wrapped in 6 layers of composite and allowed to cure.
