1 Inch Branch off 8 Inch Fire Main

The 1” branch coming off the 8” fire main was found to be suffering from severe external corrosion.

Nature of Defect

The 1” branch coming off the 8” fire main was found to be suffering from severe external corrosion (Cat C2), resulting in a possible through wall leak when preparation of the line takes place.

Solution

Metalyte Pipeworks solution was to build up the branch to a smooth geometry and then apply 4 layers of their bespoke epoxy composite system. This would halt any further corrosion issues and build the strength back in to the line for full operational requirements.

Repair Method

The full repair area was surface prepped to SSP SP11 to remove all corrosion and gain the surface profile required for the composite to adhere to. All work was completed while the line was live.
The branch was then built up to a smooth geometry. Once cured, a resin bond coat was applied prior to the application of the composite. The branch was then wrapped in 4 layers of composite and allowed to cure.
